Today’s Scripture: And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:3-6

The writer of ‘Just as I Am’, Charlotte Elliot, truly knew she only had one plea. Crippled by illness, she struggled with feelings of worthlessness and sorrow. Her turning point came at an unexpected time and place-a small dinner gathering. A Swiss evangelist sat near her at the table that evening and presented her with the question, “Are you a Christian?” Offended, she abruptly responded that she would rather not discuss the matter. However, the question plagued her for weeks until she finally returned to him seeking what she had to do in order to know her Savior. The evangelist replied, “You have nothing of merit to bring to God, you must come just as you are.” He then led her to the Lord.

Years after placing her trust in Christ, Charlotte once again fell into depression. She desired to do great things for the Lord, but felt unable to accomplish anything for Him. Feeling more useless and crippled than ever, she consoled herself with the truth of God’s merciful salvation. With pen in hand, she shared a message that would later help prepare many souls to place their trust in Christ:

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O, Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Maybe you are an invalid, handicapped, or struggle with constant illness. You may have your health yet battle an inward sense of uselessness because you just don’t feel like you have anything to offer. Dear friend, remember your Savior loved you so much He gave His life for you. He knew you before you were born. In fact, He created you. You are anything but useless. Just like Charlotte, you may not know the impact you have made and can continue to make for the Lord until you see your Savior’s face. Don’t lose heart. Your Savior treasures you just as you are.

Devotional by Pastor Jim Scudder, Jr.
